April in Ljubljana: 7 Things Worth Your Time This Month
April is the month Ljubljana wakes up. The Ljubljanica river cafes put out their chairs, the Tivoli chestnuts start to bloom, and the city's cultural calendar fills up with the kind of events locals have been waiting for all winter. If you are staying with us at
Hotel NOX this month - or planning a visit in the next few weeks - here are the seven things we think are worth your time.
1. Open Kitchen returns - Friday 24 April
Open Kitchen (Odprta Kuhna) is the food market that defines how Ljubljana eats on a sunny Friday. Every Friday from March through November, the city's best restaurants set up stalls on
Pogacarjev trg, just behind the Triple Bridge, serving signature dishes to eat standing up with a plastic fork and a glass of Slovenian wine in the other hand.
When: Friday 24 April 2026, 10:00 - 21:00
Where: Pogacarjev trg (next to the Cathedral)
Cost: Pay as you go - most dishes EUR 5-12
From Hotel NOX: 10 minutes by bus 1 or 15 minutes on foot along the river
2. ARTish contemporary art festival - Saturday 25 April
ARTish is a one-day outdoor art festival on Gallus Embankment (Gallusovo nabrezje) - one of the most beautiful stretches of the Ljubljanica river, right in the old town. Slovenian artists set up tables along the embankment selling original work: small paintings, ceramics, prints, sculpture, photography. It is the kind of event where you can pick up a genuine piece of Slovenian contemporary art for less than the cost of a souvenir.
When: Saturday 25 April 2026, 10:00 - 17:00
Where: Gallusovo nabrezje, Ljubljana old town
Cost: Free entry
Tip: Combine with lunch at one of the embankment restaurants before heading back
3. 40th Slovenian Music Days - closing concert Thursday 23 April
The
Slovenian Music Days is one of the country's most important classical music festivals, running for its 40th year in 2026. The closing concert on
Thursday 23 April features the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra under conductor Steven Loy, performing contemporary Slovenian works alongside classical repertoire - including a piece by composer Ziga Stanic.
When: Thursday 23 April 2026, evening
Where: Gallus Hall, Cankarjev Dom
Cost: Tickets via
Eventim.si
4. Jazz at Ljubljana Castle - Friday 24 April
The
Ljubljana Castle Jazz Club hosts intimate concerts throughout the year inside the castle's stone-walled Pentagonal Tower. On
Friday 24 April at 20:00, Slovenian jazz guitarist
Slavko Ivancic performs a solo set. It is one of the most atmospheric live music venues in Ljubljana - a medieval castle room with near-perfect acoustics.
When: Friday 24 April 2026, 20:00
Where: Ljubljana Castle Jazz Club (take the funicular up from Krekov trg)
Tip: Have dinner at the castle's
Strelec restaurant first - it is one of the best tables in Ljubljana
5. Ulay / Marina Abramovic: ART VITAL - through 10 May
If you only see one exhibition in Ljubljana this spring, make it this one. The
Museum of Modern Art (Moderna galerija) is hosting
Ulay / Marina Abramovic [ART VITAL], a major retrospective of the twelve years the two performance artists lived and worked together, travelling across Europe and later the Australian outback in a Citroen van. It is a rare chance to see key works from two of the most influential performance artists of the twentieth century in one place.
When: Now through 10 May 2026
Where: Museum of Modern Art, Tomsiceva 14 (a short walk from Tivoli Park)
Cost: Adult ticket EUR 7
6. Tivoli Park in spring bloom
Free, ongoing, and walkable in an hour.
Tivoli Park is Ljubljana's green lung, and late April is when it is at its best - the chestnut trees begin to flower, the Jakopic Promenade is lined with large-format photography exhibitions that change monthly, and the park cafes open their outdoor terraces. A loop from Tivoli Castle to the promenade and back takes about an hour at a slow pace.
When: Anytime daylight hours
Where: Main entrance near the city centre, via the underpass at Cankarjeva cesta
From Hotel NOX: 15 minutes by bus or a 25-minute walk through Siska
7. Looking ahead: Salon Sauvignon wine festival - Friday 29 May
If you are planning a return visit, save the date for
Salon Sauvignon 2026 at Krizanke on
Friday 29 May. It is the most elegant wine-and-food festival in the Ljubljana calendar: curated Slovenian wineries, pairing menus from top local chefs, and live music in the open-air courtyard of a sixteenth-century monastery. Presale tickets are available now via the Ljubljana Festival website.
When: Friday 29 May 2026
Where: Krizanke Summer Theatre, Trg francoske revolucije
